What Happened in May 2026

Google officially deprecated FAQ rich results. This means the expandable Q&A sections that used to appear in search results under certain pages are gone. However, FAQPage structured data is still valid for AI parsing and content understanding.

What Actually Changed

The only thing that changed is visibility in the SERP. FAQ content on your pages still works the same way for visitors. Search engines still use structured data to understand your content. AI search features (Google SGE, Bing Copilot) still parse FAQ schema for generating answers.

What Still Works

FAQ content continues to be one of the best ways to rank for long-tail, question-based queries. Pages with well-structured FAQ sections often rank for dozens of question keywords that would be impractical to target with individual blog posts.

FAQ schema is still worth implementing. Even without visible rich results, structured data helps search engines understand your content context and can improve how your page appears in AI-generated answers.

How to Adapt

Shift your focus from "will this show a rich result?" to "is this genuinely helpful content?" Create FAQ sections that answer real questions thoroughly. Use natural language. Structure content logically. The fundamentals of good SEO haven't changed — Google just removed one visual feature.

Consider expanding FAQ sections into more comprehensive content. A well-written FAQ answer can become a standalone blog post, a video, or a section of a larger guide. Think of FAQs as content seeds, not just schema opportunities.
